The financial impact of one soft drink per day

by Jeremia on April 21, 2008

It’s often the smallest things that can make a significant impact on our lives. Drinking just one soda per day is something that many of us would not even think twice about. However, just one soft drink daily can have an amazing financial impact on our life.

The cost of one soda per day

Assume that you spend $1.00 per day on a soft drink. After one year you will have spent $365 for one drink per day. Extending that number out over the course of many years and the money really starts to add up.
The cost of one soft drink per day:

  • 1 day = $1
  • 1 year = $365
  • 5 years = $1,825
  • 10 years = $3,650
  • 25 years = $9,125
  • 50 years = $18,250

Investing the money spent from one soda per day

Assuming you had invested that money you spent on your daily soft drink in an account (savings, stock, etc.) that earned a conservative 4% annual return, you see some very remarkable numbers start to appear:

  • 1 year = $379.60
  • 5 years = $2,500.11
  • 10 years = $5,097.81
  • 25 years = $16,781.82
  • 50 years = $60,546.36

Had you given up just one soda per day and invested that money you didn’t spend, you would be up almost $60,000, while if you continued to drink just one soda it would have cost you over $18,000.

However, sodas are one of life’s little perks, and for $1 per day you can afford to treat yourself.
