On this site (and several others that I run) there have been times that I wish I had initially set up my permalinks structure differently.  When I set up permalinks they are typically set up in a %category%/%postname% structure – thinking that it would make the most sense and be the most ideal solution.  However, I started running into a few problems when a post was assigned to multiple categories – thus, only displaying one category in the URL/permalink (e.g. a post might be filed under the category “WordPress Themes” and “WordPress” but would only display “WordPress” in the URL structure).

After looking around at several popular blogs, I noticed that a large majority simply use /%postname%/ for their permalink structure.  In changing the permalinks here, I decided to go with this new structure as well – the only problem being the migration/transfer of all of the old links.

My concerns were that I did not want any old pages and posts to have broken links, lose their rankings, etc.  After doing a little digging around I came across the free “Dean’s Permalinks Migration” plugin for WordPress.  What this simple plugin does is 301 redirect (permanently redirect) all of your old posts and pages, to the new structure.  Especially for those of us who aren’t developers/programmers it makes updating permalinks a snap and takes just a few minutes.

Word of Caution: When updating your permalinks be sure to weigh all of the options before deciding on a new structure as you can wreak havoc on your site or blog if you change your mind or need to update again.

There are many times when I have created a site using WordPress where I have had trouble managing the categories I had created.  I would have many different main categories, but many times the “child” or “sub-categories” would be the same.  This led to category-overload as there would be tons of different categories that made managing them a nightmare.

For Example:

• Category 1
  • Pictures
  • Videos
  • Articles
• Category 2
  • Pictures
  • Featured
  • News

Typically that’s how I have been setting up categories.  You will notice that they both contain the sub-category “Pictures.”  You can imagine how long your category list can get when setting up your backend this way.

I was trying to find a solution to this because I knew that there had to be a better way and eventually came across this:

query_posts(array(‘category__and’ => array(2,6)));

What this allows you to do is only display the posts that are in two categories (in this example 2 & 6).  For this to be the most effective, you will want to set up your categories in a different way than mentioned above:

• Category 1
  • Videos
  • Articles
• Category 2
  • Featured
  • News
• Pictures

Normally I would have set up “Pictures” as a subcategory under Category 1 & Category 2, however, what this allows you to do is set up a “Pictures” category only one time and apply posts to that category and the main category.

So when displaying your posts, the code says only show posts that are in “Category 1″ and “Pictures.”

Hope this helps anyone who might have had difficulty trying to figure this out.  It helped save me a lot of clutter, confusion and frustration when setting up mine.

When choosing a provider to host your WordPress website or blog, you will find that there are endless options available.  There are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of different hosting companies that have what you need to get your site up and running.

I have found that one of the easiest ways to get your site hosted and online very quickly and easily is through GoDaddy.  As the premiere domain registrar on the planet, and one of the most popular hosting providers in the world, I have been extremely happy with them for several years and to this day have yet to have a problem that isn’t immediately solved.

There are several reasons why I believe that there is not a better company to host WordPress (or in my opinion any other site).

It’s very easy to get set up (even for non-techies)

I am not a tech-person but GoDaddy makes setting up a website or hosting account extremely easy.  They have 24/7 customer service and I have called at all times of the day and someone is always able to assist me and I usually have my questions answered and off the phone with them in under 15 minutes.

GoDaddy makes installing WordPress ridiculously easy (even for the most non-techie people).  Once you’re logged in it’s only a few clicks to have WordPress installed.  After it’s installed, in my experience the new site is ready to go in about an hour (more times than not, less than that).

Affordability

As far as cost, they are one of the best out there.  GoDaddy somewhat pioneered discount pricing on web hosting, domain name registration, and pretty much brought market prices down to a more affordable level for everyone (no doubt this is one of the reasons they are now the market leader by far).

Wide variety of products and services

Another great reason that GoDaddy is so awesome is that there are tons of things that you can order and set up through them: email, web hosting, domain names, the list goes on and on.

GoDaddy + WordPress = Easy & Affordable

If you can’t tell, I am a huge GoDaddy fan so I’m a little (a lot) biased.  I don’t think that there has ever been a time where I have been disappointed (knock on wood).  And not being the most technical person I believe that their customer service, pricing and easy-to-setup WordPress hosting is pretty much unparalleled.
