Searching for Christmas Online: A closer look at 23 holiday-related domain names

by Jeremia on December 14, 2008

Christmas is right around the corner!  Thousands of businesses around the world count on the last two months of the year to help them turn a profit and November and December will be the difference between ending the year in the black or in the red.  Commerce thrives around the holiday season and retailers everywhere are competing to reach consumers online and offline, where estimated per person spending on Christmas gifts will be about $620 this year (according to Gallup)

With the holiday season at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts right now, I thought it would be interesting to see what the different premium and generic Christmas-related domains would be doing to capitalize on this massive amount of potential traffic.  From Christmas.com to YuleLog.com we’ll take a closer look at what each domain owner is doing: from parking, to partnering, to fully-developed sites.  Note: a parked site is a domain name that has been registered by someone with no site developed, they contract with a “Parking” company to monetize any traffic to the site through ads that are clicked.  So, grab some cookies and milk, put on your favorite Christmas music, and let’s get started:

The naughty and nice list of Christmas-related domains:

Christmas.com – Parked
MerryChristmas.com – Somewhat Developed

What this tells us

Out of the 23 premium Christmas-related domain names that we looked at, only 7 of them were developed into sites.  All of the others either redirected, were parked, under construction, or there was no site at all.  Each domain name owner has to prioritize what they are working on to make best use of their assets.  These are all premium and high-quality domains that have viable businesses that could be built around each for the Christmas traffic and shoppers.

It may be worth the time and effort for them to develop these sites into useful, information-rich resources that can benefit visitors.

What would you do with one of these domains?
