If you are trying to build or promote a website you have no doubt come across forums, articles, and websites that are always talking about PageRank (PR).  PageRank is Google’s way of determining how important a website, blog or page is compared to others on the internet.

I know of people who are constantly working to better their PageRank and are always trying to find ways to improve it or get theirs higher.  Anytime Google updates PageRank you will see a flurry of news and it has the web community in a buzz when they updated.  While it’s a good indicator to see how you’re faring with Google, I have seen plenty of sites that have a PageRank of 0 or 1 make a lot more money and become a lot more successful than sites that have a PageRank of 5, 6, 7, or 8.

Stop worrying

As I mentioned, I know plenty of people who spend countless hours trying to increase their PageRank, and when an update comes and knocks down their site one or two notches, they’re in an absolute frantic.

Most of this is undue stress that us as internet marketers have put on ourselves in an attempt to constantly be in the good graces of Google.  While I’m an advocate of constantly trying to better a site – PageRank is ONE of the many, many indicators I use to determine how a site is doing.

How does PageRank affect you?

What is important when building a successful website or blog is the traffic and the revenue.  I have seen many sites that have a high PageRank make a tiny fraction and have much fewer visitors than low PageRank sites.  If your PageRank  drops a point or two but your traffic and revenue stays the same – does it really matter?

How can I improve PageRank?

If you’re reading this then you know the answer – it doesn’t matter, stop fretting about it.  It is but one of many different factors, at the end of the day it’s about making money and getting more visitors.

Stop focusing on PageRank & start focusing on results

At the end of the day you want to keep your focus on traffic, revenue, and results.  If you went from a PR 6 to a PR 3 and you’re still getting as much traffic, and still making as much money – it doesn’t matter what your PageRank is.

You want to stay focused on the factors that influence your traffic and revenue – and not base your entire strategy around attaining a high PageRank.
