Basecamp – A simple way to manage projects online

37Signals has become well-known for its web-based applications that allow you to be more productive.  Personally, I have used several of their products (and use their Ta-da list application on a daily basis) and found them to be great at allowing you to organize information and collaborate with others without the need to install special software.

Basecamp is one of their products that they have created that allows you to manage projects online without the need for  installation of special software.  It is an excellent way to stay up-to-date on projects and allows you to see where everyone is at any given time with their tasks at hand.

Instead of trying to keep track of what everyone is working on, Basecamp allows you to assign logins and permissions to various users and set goals, keep tabs, and coordinate an effort to complete a task.

Basecamp Features

Built with only the things you need and none of the things you don’t (one of 37Signals’ business models), anyone can easily get up and running with Basecamp to manage and coordinate their various projects.

  • Customizable design with the ability to change colors and logos
  • Projects due within 14 days are shown
  • Latest activity from projects is shown
  • To-do lists
  • File sharing
  • Message boards
  • Milestones (allows you to keep track of where people are at on a project)
  • Time tracking (for tacking time spent on various projects)
  • Comments

There are several other features that make Basecamp an ideal solution for anyone that needs to coordinate or manage projects (even if there are only a couple of people working on them).

Plans & Pricing

Basecamp offers four levels of the service with each offering various features.  The program caters to everything from the small start-up to enterprise companies with hundreds or thousands of projects.

Included in all plans are: The ability to have unlimited users, security, and time tracking.

If you’re looking for a great way to manage projects and people within your organization (big or small), it’s definitely worth your time to if anything, at least give it a look and see how you like it.
