If you’re not familiar with the term augmented reality, don’t worry – you’re not the only one. Recently ReadWriteWeb has been chronicling and following along with the latest iPhone application news for iPhones that incorporate “augmented reality.” What augmented reality (AR) allows you to do is place information on top of a live or real-world environment. It’s pretty crazy stuff that is almost something like what you would see in the movies.
So what these iPhone apps do is place information on top of real-world places or things. For example, say you were walking around a major metro area, you could hold your iPhone up just like you were going to take a picture and it will give you information about your surroundings. This is amazing stuff, especially for local applications, games, and has tons of other uses. Yelp! has already developed an augmented reality feature into their application and I’m sure we’ll be seeing more and more of this as the months pass.
