Above the fold

What is “above the fold?”

Whether you are an advertiser or publisher, you will no doubt hear this phrase referenced when it comes to advertising.  The phrase “above the fold” refers to the section of a page that is visible when you first visit a site.  It is the uppermost portion of a page that you can see without scrolling.

For example, that you type in a website and you land on a page.  What you see after you land on a page is what would be considered above the fold, without the use of scrolling or going further down the page.

The importance of content and ads above the fold

Since anything above the fold is the first thing that a visitor to your website will see, you should put thought into placing the most important content or ads in this section.  Also, for publishers, this portion of a page can command a premium price compared to the rest of the ads on a page, as it is the section that every visitor to the page will certainly see.
