20 Majestic Photos of the Manta Ray

Manta rays are one of the most beautiful animals to be found in our oceans. These huge (yet harmless) creatures glide effortlessly through the tropical waters of the world. Known for their curious and almost friendly personalities, the manta ray will investigate boats, divers and snorkelers if they are in the area.

They seem to fly through the water with their wings, have been seen breaching (jumping out of the water), can appear like a shark from a distance (because they swim so near the surface of the water and their wing tips often come out of the water), and are easily recognized by their distinct black and white markings. If you ever get the chance to snorkel or dive with manta rays, it one of the most peaceful and amazing experiences imaginable.

While fairly little is known about the manta ray in comparison to other ocean-dwelling animals, it is known that they are harmless, can reach lengths of up to 25 feet across, feed on small fish and plankton, and can weigh several tons (over 4,000 pounds).

Often confused with StingRays

As mentioned, very little is known about Manta Rays and their habits or classification. Commonly, manta rays are placed in the same class as stingrays and eagle rays. However, some bioligists have started classifying them into their own class and a species that is separate from stingrays. Since many people have never seen (or heard of) manta rays, they are often easily confused with stingrays. Other than their basic shapes, stingrays and mantas have relatively little in common. The two most distinct differences between the two being:

Size - Manta rays can have a wingspan of up to 25 feet, while stingrays are much smaller and have a more rounded shape.

Ability to sting – Stingrays have a barb that can harm predators or the unlucky person who might step on one, however, manta rays have no stinging mechanism at all, just a large long tail.

Mouth - While mantas have a mouth that is located at the front of their body, a stingray’s mouth is located underneath it’s body.
